Why Your Candle Isn’t Burning Evenly (and How to Fix It)
Okay this one is for anyone who’s ever lit a candle and then thought…
“Why does it look like that??”
Like the wax is only melted in the middle, the sides are untouched, and now you feel like you somehow ruined it.
Good news: you didn’t. And it’s actually super easy to fix.
What is “tunneling” (and why does it happen)
That uneven burn where only the center melts is called tunneling. It usually happens when you don’t let your candle burn long enough the first time.
Wax has memory (I know… weird), so if it only melts a small circle at the top, it’ll keep burning that way every time.
The fix: let it fully melt (at least once)
The easiest way to avoid tunneling is to let the wax melt all the way across the top before you blow it out.
This usually takes:
- about 2–4 hours depending on the size
It sounds like a long time, but it makes your candle last way longer in the end.
Trim your wick (this matters more than you think)
If your flame is too big or flickering like crazy, your wick is probably too long.
Before each burn, trim it down to about ¼ inch.
This helps:
- keep the burn even
- reduce soot
- make your candle last longer
Already tunneled? don’t panic
If your candle is already doing the tunnel thing, you can still fix it.
Easy trick: wrap a little foil around the top edge and let it burn for a bit. It helps the heat distribute evenly so the wax on the sides can catch up.
Quick candle care rules
If you remember nothing else, just do this:
- let it fully melt across the top
- trim your wick before lighting
- don’t burn for more than ~4 hours at a time
Candles are meant to be enjoyed, not stressed over. Once you know these little tricks, they burn better, last longer, and honestly just look prettier while doing it.
